O’ Brien’s Tower on the Cliffs of Moher

O’ Brien’s Tower on the Cliffs of Moher stands proudly looking out on the Atlantic Sea. After several months of restoration and conservation work the tower has been fully restored.  You can now visit it all year round.

Visitors can use the tower’s top floor viewing platform to view such spectacles as the Twelve Bens mountain range, Galway Bay, Loop Head and of course our amazing Aran Islands. The bottom floor has a small artist’s gallery for local emerging talent and a gift shop for lovely souvenirs. There is a charge of €2 for adults and €1 for children to visit the upper levels of the tower, which is well worth it.

O'Brien's Tower at Cliffs of Moher with sunset

About O’Brien’s Tower

The local landlord Cornelius O’Brien, a descendant of Brian Boru The High King of Ireland, lived in this castle tower overlooking the magnificent views of the Cliffs of Moher. What a lucky guy! Cornelius can be known as one of the original tour guides of County Clare and you can read more about him in our Cliffs of Moher Facts.

O’Brien’s Tower tower marks the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher and was built in 1835 by O’Brien himself. This beautiful tower was used as an observation tower for all the Victorian tourists that frequented the cliffs at the time. Furthermore he had hoped that by attracting visitors to the area it would also help lift the local population out of poverty.

Cliffs of Moher Cruise

Doolin Ferry Co provides a Cliffs of Moher Cruise that sails directly underneath O’ Brien’s Tower. Looking up at the 700ft Cliffs of Moher is a unique way to experience them! You can also purchase a combined tickets for The Cliffs of Moher Cruise & Cliffs of Moher Center. This is the full 360 experience, so you can board the O’Brien’s Ferry and visit O’Brien’s tower!
